We're outgrowing our house but don't want to move - is an addition the answer?

My husband and I have been in our current home for about eight years now, and when we bought it, it was just the two of us and plenty of space for our needs. But we've since had two kids, both sets of parents are getting older and staying with us more often, and I've started working from home full-time, so suddenly our cozy little house feels like it's shrinking around us. We've talked about moving to a bigger place, but honestly we love our neighborhood, our neighbors, the schools, and the thought of going through the whole house hunting process again makes me want to crawl under a rock. The obvious alternative seems to be adding on to our existing house, either building up or out, to create the extra space we desperately need without having to uproot our lives. I'm thinking a new master suite with a proper bathroom would be ....., or maybe an office that's actually quiet enough for me to take video calls without my kids bursting in every five minutes. But I have no idea how to even begin this process, like do we need an architect or a designer or do we just go straight to a contractor? I've heard horror stories about additions that went way over budget and took forever to complete, so I want to make sure I'm doing my homework upfront. I've been searching for dedicated home addition contractors Palo Alto who have experience with this kind of project and can guide us through the whole process from design to completion. Has anyone here done a home addition and can share what the experience was like? How disruptive was it to your daily life and were there any unexpected challenges you wish you'd known about beforehand? I really want to make an informed decision before we commit to anything major.
