MONTREAL -- A match against the last-place Montreal Impact was exactly what Toronto FC needed to get out of its funk. Toronto scored early and never looked back, beating the rival Impact 2-0 at Saputo Stadium on Saturday for their first win in five league games, and first road win since April. TFC manager Ryan Nelsen, whose team was coming off back-to-back losses against Sporting KC and D.C. United, knows just how important a win over a rival city can be. "Ive been on the wrong end of a few, and they dont feel good," said Nelsen. "It was nice to come into Montreal and get a win. Theyre a bit of a wounded animal, and they have some really dangerous players. They have a very good team and a very good coach who knows the league well. "Were not celebrating -- we didnt just win the Champions League. Well tick the box, and well move on." An early strike by Gilberto was all Toronto needed to cruise to victory on Saturday, before Luke Moore added an insurance goal for the visitors in the second half. With the win, TFC (8-7-5) leapfrogged the New England Revolution and now sit third in the Eastern Conference standings. The Impact (3-13-5), meanwhile, have lost a franchise-high six games in a row. Theyve been in the Eastern Conference basement for four months. Playing against the team they beat in the Amway Canadian Championship in early June did not give Montreal that much-needed spark. Instead, the Impact chased much of the ball in the first half, and went to the dressing room at the interval without a shot on target. Montreal made fewer passes, won fewer duels and had less possession than TFC throughout the game. Montreals three yellow cards were the product of late and frustrated tackles. "I thought we would come out with more fire," said Impact captain Patrice Bernier. "Its a derby, and youre playing TFC. They were in a bad spell, and were in a bad spell. We lost a lot of the battles, and we found our feet too late." Montreal put up more of a fight in the second half, but none of its four shots on target could beat goalkeeper Joseph Bendik. "I understand that not everybody understands the derby, but some guys have been here for three years," added Bernier. "You know how these games are intense and aggressive. Its frustrating and its difficult." Gilberto scored in the 11th minute when his shot from inside the 18-yard box rang off the crossbar and landed a foot across the goal-line. Impact goalie Troy Perkins smothered the ball, but the linesman confirmed it was a good goal. Perkins got the start in net, his first match since July 12 when a defensive mistake in the games final minute handed Sporting Kansas City the road victory. Backup keeper Evan Bush started between the uprights in the Impacts following three games -- all losses. Moore doubled Torontos lead in the 54th minute, beating Perkins to a loose ball in front of the net for an easy tap-in. U.S. international Michael Bradley got the play going when his stunning through ball from deep in his own half found a streaking Dominic Oduro. Impact defender Krzysztof Krol blocked Oduros shot, but the ball fell right into Moores path. "There was a little bit of space, and we all know that Dominics strength is his ability to run and get in behind guys," said the playmaker Bradley. "He did a great job of setting the guy up and made it a really easy decision for me. The movement was good. That was the goal that finished off the game at that point." Star striker Jermain Defoe missed the game with a possible sports hernia he may have sustained during Torontos midweek clash with D.C. United. "Hes been feeling his groin for a few weeks now," said Nelsen. "Remember, hes been going for over a year, pushing on. Its just to get these little niggles of your ......., being worn down. Hopefully its nothing too bad, nothing too major." The former Tottenham Hotspur forward, acquired by TFC in January, will undergo a scan on Sunday to determine the severity of the injury. Defoe will likely miss this Wednesdays Major League Soccer all-star game. But Toronto didnt need its leading goal scorer on Saturday, relying on its two other forwards Gilberto and Moore for the goals. "In some ways, we were a bit desperate tonight," said Bradley, who finished the game with an assist and two shots on target. "After two games in a row, where for different reasons we didnt walk off the field with the results that we wanted, we really wanted to make sure that we gave a good performance tonight. The performance reflected that." This was Montreals first game since a midweek management shuffle that saw sporting director Nick De Santis moved to an administrative role. De Santiss demotion gave manager Frank Klopas full control of the squad. On Saturday, Klopas took full responsibility for the loss against Toronto. "At the end of the day, its tough because I know we put a lot into it," he said. "We were very flat. Im ready to do whats in the best interest of the club. Just from an energy standpoint, we didnt do enough. We did too much, we were tired, the heat - those are all excuses." Of the 16,665 people in attendance at Saputo Stadium on Saturday, several hundred donned red and white TFC jerseys and made a lot of noise throughout the match. "The support was absolutely .....," said Nelsen. "If theyve travelled up from Toronto -- or wherever theyve come from -- all the guys and the coaching staff are so appreciative of what they did and they really made themselves heard. When you play on a Wednesday, in .... conditions, that really helps." Montreal plays its first CONCACAF Champions League match against El Salvadors FAS at home on Tuesday. Notes: Dilly Duka, 24, acquired from the Chicago Fire in exchange for Sanna Nyassi on Tuesday, came on as a substitute in the 74th minute. à Forward Anthony Jackson-Hammel, who will be 21 on Sunday, made his first appearance with the Impact since signing a professional contract on Friday. à The last time these two clubs faced each other, Montreal recorded a 1-0 victory at home to repeat as winners of the Amway Canadian Championship. Under Armour Micro G Torch Black . Rockhold." Known as an aggressive striker, Belfort (23-10) instead paced himself as the engaged in the early going and showed restraint by not overcommitting against the larger Rockhold (10-2). But when the opportunity presented itself, Belfort delivered an incredible spinning heel kick that landed flush on Rockholds chin and sent him toppling to the floor. Curry One Mvp For Sale . The Spanish champions decision not to sign a defender during the January transfer window may have backfired after Valencia took advantage of a lethargic, uninspired effort by its hosts at the Camp Nou, where former Spain coach Luis Aragones -- who previously coached the Catalan side -- was honoured after his death on Saturday. http://www.underarmourtrainersale.com/u ... y-2-5.html. Jamies number grades given are out of five, with five being the best mark. Marc-Andre Fleury, Pittsburgh Penguins (5) – He was locked in all night, made huge stops on Benoit Pouliot, Raphael Diaz, Ryan Mcdonagh, Carl Hagelin, Rick Nash (twice) but none better than the three saves on Mats Zuccarello. Under Armour Scorpio . There were no real chances until Augsburg broke the deadlock through Raul Bobadilla in the 33rd minute. Frankfurt failed to clear a cross and Bobadilla slotted home from close range at the far post. Under Armour Phenom Proto . -- The guys in green raced off the court and into the locker room where they danced and sang, compared whose shot was most likely to end up featured on "One Shining Moment," and checked Twitter to see who was giving them a shoutout. After 20 weeks of regular season football let the playoffs begin! For all players, coaches and management types that made the postseason this week is a good one because whether you have the bye or a game this Sunday, you know the season and an opportunity is present. Based on the history of this league whether youre the crossover team or the team with the best record in the league you cant win it all because it truly is about who plays the best that day. Not day after day, that single, solitary day. For Ottawa and Toronto who played last Friday night, have no doubt - this 2014 season was disappointing because the truth is in a nine-team league if you dont make the playoffs what other possible conclusion can you draw? In the case of Ottawa the honeymoon is over and expectations will surge towards winning and entertaining and no longer creating and improving. The two positive goals that were established for the Redblacks is in stadium fan attendance and a core of good players to build on. The in-stadium fan response was special because it was maintained throughout the year. I anticipated it to waver as the season moved on but it didnt and that was enjoyable to watch. No doubt with a better team that spirit will continue into 2015. Many of the players on the present Ottawa roster will be on next years squad and I feel they accomplished their goal of finding a core of players. They do need more but a sense of continuity was evident in the second half of the season and that group of about 12 will be better than this next year if for no other reason than they are in the same system for another year. I would definitely bring Henry Burris back but they do have to find the next Mike Reilly to create an effective image of success. Age effects all and Henry is no longer a puppy, more an older pit bull. For Toronto through the season they were painful to watch for two reasons. For one, injuries to key players were consistent and the other was the embarrassing absence of true professional football training and practice facilities. We all noticed the turn-around in Hamilton with the addition of Tim Hortons Field and the Argos need to find their own Tim Hortons Field to be a rejuvenated success. And they need to develop the next Ricky Ray who will be closer to 40 than 30 at the end of the 2015 season. I think it is a truth to say the No. 1 challenge for the next commissioner iss to solve the Toronto Argonaut problem.dddddddddddd In BC there is no other team with a more difficult challenge going into the playoffs than the Lions. They lost their last twp games by pretty dominant scores, to Edmonton 37-3, and last week at home to Calgary 33-16. Their confidence is being tested but once again even though they travel west to east it is a one-game event in football, so BC needs to rediscover its confidence for Sunday November 16 as that is the only day it is needed. Stephan Logan for BC makes a difference. He had 117 yards rushing and 70 yards in pass receptions and is the guy the Lions can lean on. For Montreal even though they lost to Hamilton 29-15 they beat BC 24-9 in Week 2 and 41-5 in Week 4. That was a long time ago, and beating the same team three times in one year is tough to do, so advantage BC. This one will not be easy for an Alouette team coming off the Tiger-Cat loss. I give BC a real chance for the upset. With Calgary they are set to sit, wait and pounce. Scoring 33 points and winning and getting all healthy again with a bye week ahead, the Stampeders are the team to beat. For the Ticats the win over Montreal was significant in so many ways. First, they remained undefeated at Tim Hortons Field, home of the East final. The bye week is the first rest in 13 weeks for Hamilton as their two regular season byes came in the first half of the season. Plus, they have a defence that continues to improve by making game-changing plays or taking away a teams best player. Duron Carter had 11 catches for 185 yards against Toronto two weeks ago, against Hamilton he had only four catches for 43 yards. From a record of 1-6 back in August to East Division champions and now one game away from the Grey Cup, well done Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The West semi-final will match Saskatchewan at Edmonton and just like BC the Riders have a good chance for the upset, and it would be an upset indeed. But Saskatchewan did run for an ..... 193 yards between all running backs and their quarterback and do have a pivot who has played playoff football before. They had no Mike Reilly and no John White last game, but trust me when I say this, if Edmonton does not play its best football it will not win. Kerry Joseph can handle the pressure. BC at Montreal at 1pm et, Saskatchewan at Edmonton at 4:30pm et this Sunday on TSN. Let the playoffs begin!
