He explained that the deletion of the "ghost workers" followed four months of audit the agency carried out after it detected some discrepancies on its beneficiary payroll.


He enumerated a number of fraudulent acts being perpetrated by people to draw unmerited allowances from the public purse.


He noted that some cases involved people with no appointment letters or with fake appointment letters.


Frimpong noted that some district directors in the 216 local government areas across the country connived with some of the beneficiaries to dupe the nation of millions of dollars.


He said the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) had already launched full-scale investigations into the matter and would soon begin to prosecute those who would be found culpable.


The YEA in April suspended the payment of allowances to beneficiaries to allow for a full audit of its staff.


The Ghanaian government also suspended the salaries of some 26,589 public sector workers in an attempt to rid its payroll of "ghost names".
